Sapphire, the gemstone with the colour of 2020

Every year, the Pantone Institute announces the colour of the year, i.e., one shade to symbolise the coming 365 days socially and culturally. Classic blue was chosen as the 2020 colour. The popular blue colour of sapphire symbolises calmness, constancy, and self-confidence.

Blue Sapphire

The blue sapphire, along with the ruby, belongs to the most important gemstone group. Both of these gems are classified by geologists as corundum and are among the hardest minerals after diamond. The colour range of this mineral is wide and differs due to the admixture of other elements in the stone. Thanks to this, green, yellow, pink, white, and black sapphires are created. The basic, best-known and most valued variant of sapphire remains the blue colour. When valuing blue sapphires, the purity and intensity of the blue colour are decisive. A slight purple tint without a trace of green or cataracts is best.

JEWELLERY WITH SAPPHIRE

Sapphires are also suitable for everyday wear. However, be careful to avoid exposure to excessive heat and contact with chemicals. Use a soft toothbrush with a solution of mild soap and warm water to clean.

Jewellery can also be cleaned in an ultrasonic unit. Sapphire jewellery is a very popular gift for lovers of blue coloue, especially for those born in the month of September or under the sign of Aquarius. In our goldsmith's studio, we offer not only blue but also white sapphires. They compete with diamonds with their hardness, beautiful shine, and lower price.

LEGEND OF SAPPHIRE

There are many legends surrounding the sapphire. The ancient Persians believed that the earth rested on a huge sapphire, and the blue sky was its reflection. This proves that it has been a very rare and valued mineral since ancient times. Even the name "sapphire" itself has Arabic origins. The ancient physician Galén recommended wearing sapphire against colds. King Solomon himself wore a sapphire ring. Much later, Pope Innocent III ordered that all rings of church dignitaries and bishops to be decorated with sapphire. According to superstition, it was supposed to moderate God's anger, promote good thoughts, and strengthen faith.

Significant sapphire jewelLEry

The most famous sapphire is called the Star of India and was found 300 years ago in Sri Lanka. It has also become famous due to the fact that it was stolen from an American museum, only to be found again two months later. Its setting in engagement rings is very popular. Princess Diana also wore one of them, and today wears it Duchess Kate Middleton. Sapphires are an integral part of the Czech and British crown jewels.

The list of well-known and lesser-known sapphires would be very long. This unique mineral is used not only as jewellery but also in industry due to its hardness. It is inspiring for both the art world and the animal kingdom. The very rare sapphire tarantula, which lives only in southern India, is considered a gem in the spider kingdom.
