MEET PERIDOT
In ancient Egypt, peridot was also called "evening emerald" precisely because of its dazzling glow in the rays of the sun and candles.
Peridot experienced its biggest "boom" after 1990, when a huge deposit was found in Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan. Today, the price and value of olivine vary depending on the size and quality of each piece. However, the rule is that the darker the colour, the more expensive the stone. But the gem is generally considered one of the more available green stones.
IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT...
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that look the same in different lights, i.e. sunlight, candles and artificial lighting. And light has accompanied this stone since its beginnings.
The Egyptians called it the stone of light and used it to ward off evil spirits. They believed that when darkness falls, peridots still shine with light. It was also considered to enhance the effects of medicine! Any medicine that was drunk from a cup made of olivine was said to be more effective. They used peridot powder as a medicine for various ailments. The priests even believed that by drinking the dust from this gem, they would get closer to the gods. Therefore, they crushed the stones into a fine powder and boiled them to make a strong intoxicating drink.
DIFFERENT SHADES OF OLIVE
The shade of the gemstone is influenced by the amount of iron in the soil. For example, peridot from Myanmar has a bright green colour, while peridot from Arizona has a golden brown hue. Which one would you choose?
MAIN PERIDOT DEPOSIT
Olivine deposits can be found in America, China, Africa, Australia or Sri Lanka.
FORMATION OF PERIDOTS
Peridot was formed millions of years ago deep in the Earth's upper mantle (only diamonds form deeper than that). It only reaches the surface through volcanic eruptions or tectonic forces. It is therefore naturally found near volcanoes and in mountainous areas where tectonic plates have collided and risen. Which are, for example, the Hawaiian Islands.
The ancient Hawaiians believed that peridot was the hardened tears of the fire goddess Pelé and was a generous gift to her beloved people. Small grains of olivine can still be found on some Hawaiian beaches today, but they are too small to be processed into jewellery.
PERIDOT SHAPES
Just as peridot is a gemstone of many shades, so too is it a gemstone of many shapes. With us you will find a very wide range of shapes and sizes.
From traditional round, oval shapes, to atypical angular, emerald, or cut teardrops. If you require a certain cut or size, write to us and we will immediately send you the current offer of olivines.
GOLDSMITH'S TIP
Unfortunately, the gemstone peridot is not one of the hardest minerals. It is therefore more prone to scratching. Excessive heat and large temperature changes are not good for him either.
AND A FEW WORDS ABOUT PERIDOT...
-
In the past, peridot was often confused with emerald or green topaz.
-
Olivine also appears in space - e.g. on Mars or on meteorites.
-
It reached Europe thanks to the Crusades, which is why it was often used to decorate churches in the Middle Ages.
